The CTR can provide a 25-minute warning of impending tornado activity with better than 1 Km spatial accuracy.

Cloud Top Radiometer:
the tornado detector

The Cloud Top Radiometer (CTR) is a proprietary sensor design targeted at detecting tornados and hailstorms from space. Located on a Geostationary satellite over the US, it can automatically spot high risk areas where severe storms are most likely to happen. The CTR can give as much as a 25-minute warning of impending tornado activity with better than 1 Km spatial accuracy.

Designed for NASA under a small business grant, the CTR would weigh less than 15 pounds and require less than 30 watts of power and can be located on any Geostationary satellite.
